Education systems in Brazil

The Brazilian education is structured in two levels: the basic (eleven years, of which eight are mandatory) and higher. The early childhood education for children from 0 to 6 years is not compulsory and is taught in day care for students of 0 to 3 years and preschool for 3 to 6. The basic level includes the first degree, aimed at children and adolescents from 7 to 14 years (also known as "essential educação") and the second degree, 15 to 17 years (educação average). This level should provide an education that allows the student to participate in society, progress at work and in subsequent studies. In learning courses for first and second grade is required to study the Portuguese language, mathematics, physical sciences and natural and the social and political reality. From the fifth course is required to study a modern foreign language. The artistic and physical education are compulsory and environmental education should be considered in all school content; initiation technology must be started in first grade while religious education enrollment is optional. The first degree is aimed at allowing the student gradually dominate the reading, writing and calculation, it is compulsory for all children access to this level of education, being an established right to do so for free. The country has nearly 200,000 schools in first grade, between public (of all administrative orders) and private. Of this total, the majority (45%) are in the Northeast region, while the region with fewer schools is the Midwest, with only 6.2% of the total. 69% of these schools are run by prefectures, 23.7% by state governments, 6.8% and individuals are only 123 schools (0.06%) are the responsibility of the federal government.
